Medically
Fragile Foster Care
Who we serve
Children referred for Growing Home Southeast’s
Medically Fragile services are typically aged
birth to seven years, and are stable enough
not to need full-time hospital care. Their medical
conditions may include:
• Premature birth/complications
• Burn victims
• HIV positive
• Drug dependency
• Fetal Alcohol Syndrome
How we serve them
• Growing Home Southeast contracts with a medical
specialist to assist in assessing the needs
of the child on an “as needed” basis.
• Treatment parents and families are offered
special training and preparation to meet the
individual needs of the child. The treatment
parents must be full time and have a medical
background to care for these children.
• Growing Home Southeast allows time for the
family of origin to adapt and train for the
integration of the fragile child into the family
structure.
• Treatment parents meet weekly with Growing
Home Southeast clinical specialists.
• Licensed respite providers are available
to assist treatment parents in serving medically-fragile
children.
Expected outcomes
The goal of Growing Home Southeast’s Medically
Fragile Foster Care service is to transition
children with special medical and physical needs
from institutional settings to less restrictive
home environments or to prevent them from requiring
institutionalization in the first place.
